Privacy Policy for Couple Quiz
1. Introduction
This Privacy Policy explains how Couple Quiz ("the App", "we", "our") collects, uses, and protects information when you use our mobile application available on Android and iOS. Couple Quiz is a paired quiz game in which two people guess how well they know each other. By using the App, you agree to the practices described in this policy.
Your use of the App is also governed by our Terms of Use / End User License Agreement.
We are committed to protecting your privacy. The App is designed to work primarily on your own device, and we collect only the minimum data necessary to provide the game's features and to improve the experience.
2. Information We Collect
2.1 Information Stored Only on Your Device
By default, Couple Quiz plays as a two-player game on a single device, and the following information stays on your device and is not sent to our servers:
- Player and partner names - the names you enter in the setup guide so the game can address each player. These are stored locally on your device only.
- Setup guide (wizard) answers - light questions about your relationship (for example, how long you have been together) used to choose an appropriate difficulty level. Stored locally on your device.
- Game statistics and history - per-question results, rounds played, and which questions you have already answered, kept on your device so that fresh questions are shown first.
- Achievements - gamification progress stored locally on your device.
- App settings and preferences - such as sounds on/off, dark mode, and the selected language. Stored locally on your device.
- Cached question content - a local copy of the question database so the App can run offline once downloaded.
2.2 Information Collected Automatically
- Question content requests - when the App downloads or refreshes its question database, it contacts our backend with the selected language code and the version of the content it already has. No personal identifiers are required for this request.
- Device identifier and key - if you use online or two-device play, push notifications, or send feedback, the App creates a randomly generated device identifier and a secret key stored locally on your device. The identifier is used to recognise your device on our backend and is not linked to your real identity.
- Platform and locale - basic technical values such as your platform (Android/iOS) and language/region setting may be sent to our backend to deliver correctly localised content and notifications.
- Push notification token - a Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) token issued by Google. It is sent to our backend only when you use features that require notifications (for example, online play), to deliver alerts such as "it's your turn" or "your partner left the game". The token may be refreshed periodically by the system.
2.3 Information You Provide Through Online Play
Couple Quiz offers an optional online mode in which two people can play together from two separate devices. When you choose to pair and play online, the following information is sent to and stored on our backend so the shared game can work:
- Pairing data - a short pairing code (and/or QR code) and a pairing token used to connect your two devices.
- Player profile - the display name (up to 32 characters) and, optionally, a gender setting (male, female, or neutral) used to personalise questions and turn order.
- Game answers and progress - the answers each player gives during an online game (chosen options or typed text), whether a pair matched, scores, the categories played, shared statistics, and achievements unlocked for the pair. This is required to synchronise the game between the two devices and to keep your shared progress.
If you only play in the default single-device mode, your names, answers, and statistics stay on your device and are not uploaded to our servers.
2.4 Feedback and Optional Diagnostics
When you submit feedback from the App's settings, we collect the feedback category (bug, suggestion, payment, notification, or other) and the message you choose to write. This is transmitted to our backend so we can review your request, investigate issues, and improve the App.
- Contact e-mail - optional. If you provide your e-mail address, we use it only to respond to your feedback or support request. It is not required to send feedback.
- Basic technical metadata - when feedback is sent, we may include technical information such as App version and build, platform (Android/iOS), operating system version, device model, and locale, so we can understand which version and environment the feedback relates to.
- Optional diagnostics - if you enable the "Attach diagnostic data" option, the App may also send additional technical diagnostic data to help us reproduce problems, such as the current App screen, selected theme, notification permission status, connectivity type, premium/subscription status, recent sanitized API errors, and short in-memory App logs.
- Request metadata - when feedback is received, our server may record the IP address and browser/user-agent string of the request for security, abuse prevention, and troubleshooting.
3. How We Use Your Information
We use the collected information for the following purposes:
- To deliver the localised question database to the App and keep it up to date.
- To enable optional online play, pair two devices, and synchronise the shared game and progress between them.
- To send game-related push notifications (such as turn reminders) when you use features that require them.
- To process and verify in-app purchases (Premium and question packs) through RevenueCat.
- To display advertisements to free-tier users via Google AdMob, and to request and respect your advertising consent choices where required by law.
- To maintain and improve the App's functionality, stability, and content.
- To receive and process feedback, bug reports, and support requests, and to diagnose technical issues when you choose to attach optional diagnostic data.
We do not sell or rent your personal information. We do not use your game answers, profile data, feedback messages, optional diagnostic data, or support e-mails for advertising or profiling. Data is shared with third-party services only to the extent required to provide the features described above.
4. Online Play and Backend Data
To support optional online and two-device play, our backend stores a record for your device (its random identifier, platform, locale, and push token), the pairing between two devices, each player's display name and optional gender setting, and the state and history of the games you play together, including the answers exchanged and the shared statistics and achievements.
This data is used exclusively to run the shared game between paired devices, deliver the related notifications, and keep your shared progress. Pairing codes are short-lived and expire automatically. You can leave a pairing from within the App, which deactivates your membership in that pair.
Backend data is stored on servers operated by our hosting provider and is protected by industry-standard security measures. Communication between the App and our backend uses HTTPS/TLS, and each device authenticates with its locally stored secret key.
5. Advertising and Consent
The free version of the App may display advertisements provided by Google AdMob. Premium users do not see ads, and the App does not load AdMob placements while Premium is active.
Depending on your location and applicable law, we may ask for your consent before showing personalised ads or using certain advertising identifiers, cookies, or similar technologies. In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland, the App may use Google's User Messaging Platform (UMP) to present privacy choices and communicate them to Google and its advertising partners.
If you give consent, AdMob may use data such as advertising identifiers, device information, app usage, approximate location, and ad interaction data to show personalised ads and measure their performance. If you do not give consent, the App may show non-personalised or limited ads where available, or no ads at all. Your choice does not affect access to the App's core free features.
You can manage or change your advertising privacy choices later from the App's settings through the "Privacy options" entry, where available, as well as through your device and Google account settings. We do not receive raw advertising identifiers from AdMob for our own use, and we do not combine advertising data with your game data, feedback messages, or support e-mails.
6. Third-Party Services
The App integrates the following third-party services, each of which may process data according to its own privacy policy:
- Google Firebase (Cloud Messaging) - used to deliver push notifications. Firebase may process device and diagnostics data. Privacy policy: firebase.google.com/support/privacy
- Google AdMob and Google User Messaging Platform - used to show ads to free-tier users and to manage advertising consent. AdMob may collect device information, app interaction data, advertising identifiers where available, IP address, and approximate location derived from network information. Privacy policy: policies.google.com/privacy
- RevenueCat - processes in-app purchase and subscription data, including purchase receipts and entitlement status (Premium and question packs). RevenueCat does not receive personally identifiable information from the App. Privacy policy: revenuecat.com/privacy
- Apple App Store / Google Play - process payments for purchases and subscriptions according to their own terms and privacy policies.
- Hosting provider - our backend and database are operated on servers provided by our hosting provider, which processes the backend data described above on our behalf.
We also use the DeepL translation service on our servers to help translate question content between languages. This is an internal content operation and does not process your personal data.
7. Data Retention
- Local data (names, setup answers, game statistics, history, achievements, settings, and cached content) is retained on your device until you uninstall the App or clear its data.
- Device records and push tokens on our backend are retained for as long as your device remains registered or actively paired, and are removed when the associated records are deleted.
- Online game data (pairings, profiles, answers, statistics, and progress) is retained while the pair is active and for a reasonable period afterwards to support continuity; pairing codes expire automatically.
- Subscription and purchase data is retained by RevenueCat and the app stores in accordance with their data retention policies.
- Advertising and consent-related data is processed and retained by Google AdMob, Google UMP, and their partners according to their own policies. The App may store your consent status so your advertising choices can be respected.
- Feedback messages, optional contact e-mail addresses, and optional diagnostic data are retained only as long as reasonably necessary to review and resolve the request, improve the App, and maintain support records.
8. Data Security
All communication between the App and our backend is transmitted over HTTPS/TLS. Each device is authenticated using a randomly generated secret key stored locally. We implement reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect the data we hold against unauthorised access, loss, or disclosure. However, no method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is 100% secure.
Before diagnostic data is sent, the App is designed to limit and sanitize the payload so that sensitive values such as tokens, authentication headers, and other secrets are not included where technically feasible. Our backend logging is designed not to record request bodies, secrets, tokens, or game answers.
9. Your Rights
Depending on your location, you may have the following rights regarding your personal data:
- Right of access - you may request a copy of the personal data we hold about your device.
- Right to rectification - you may correct your display name at any time within the App.
- Right to erasure - you may request deletion of your device record and associated online-play data by contacting us (see Section 12). Leaving all pairings within the App and uninstalling it removes most data automatically.
- Right to restriction and objection - you may request that we restrict processing of your data, or object to processing based on our legitimate interests.
- Right to data portability - you may request your data in a machine-readable format.
- Advertising choices - where available, you may manage advertising consent in the App through "Privacy options", or through your device and Google account advertising settings.
To exercise any of these rights, please contact us using the details in Section 12. We will respond within 30 days.
10. Children's Privacy
The App is not directed to children under the age of 16. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 16. If you believe a child under 16 has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will take steps to delete such data promptly.
11. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. If the changes are significant, we will provide a more prominent notice (for example, within the App). We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
Your continued use of the App after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the updated Privacy Policy.
